The Roaches & Luds church 12th July 2025

  • 11.67km route
  • Rucking with 20kg
  • Difficulty - Hard. This route takes you up some very challenging terrain with rapid accents up difficult paths. this should only be attempted if are an experienced rucker and can confidently ascend challenging terrain in a safe way.

Our day today started very early as we wanted to get out ahead of the 30+ degree heat that was forecast. We starred at the Roaches Cafe and found a parking space as we got there by 6:45am, but this area is very popular and parking is limited.

Very early on in the route the path took us up very challenging ascent up to Hens cloud so that was a nice little surprise and got our heart rate pumping. We stopped a couple of times to catch our breath and enjoy the view on the way up, and when we got to the top the view were worth the effort.

After we had caught our breath and enjoyed the views at the top for a minute or so, we caried on along the route towards the Roaches.

Even though we started early, the temperature was rising quickly, thankfully the breeze kept up which was a lovely relief. Because of the terrain and elevation, our pace was relatively slow so we stopped for an early breakfast and a coffee after about an hour and a half.

After a well earned break we cracked on past the Roaches and on towards Lud's. After the Roaches we dropped down a rugged steep path into the tree's and followed a lovely path through the woodland. As it was cooler in the tree's with the shade we decided to stop for another coffee just before we got Lud's church. But when we got there was a treat we found. If you've not been there, it is definitely worth the hike!

The air was so cool in there which was a welcome respite form the heat of the day, and it was beautifully peaceful with the moss covered walls glowing bright green from the sunlight shining in. There is a bit of a tricking climb out to get back to the woodlands but no where near as challenging as the 1st ascent we took.

Once we got out of the woods there is a small walk along the ridgeline before heading down a small country road back towards where we parks the car.

All in all, this was a great ruck where we got to check out a natural wonder and challenge ourselves with the terrain. One to keep on your list for when you are experienced.
