Stanage Edge 18th October 2025

  • 9.62km route
  • Rucking with 20kg's
  • Route difficulty - Moderate. This route is a great route if you want a scenic route which has a little bit of challenge built in. The path is pretty good all of the way round, with no steep accents or descents. There are a few rocks and boulders along parts of the path but nothing too challenging, and the latter part of the route takes you out across some wetlands which would be more challenging if the weather has been bad, so bear this in mind. But all in all it is a nice route for a bit of an adventure.

We parked at Redmires plantation car park which is free and is down a dead end road that runs along the side of Redmires reservoir so is a nice peaceful place to star out. But bear in mind there are no facilities.

The route starts by following round the reservoir along the road towards where the footpath starts. As the road is a dead end there is very little traffic along it so no issues with cars going past. After about 5-600 meters the path takes you out towards Stanage Edge which is the main elevation gain of the route and as i said is minimal and not very steep.

When you get to Stanage Pole, you start to see the skyline open up as you get closer to the edge and the countryside ahead of you appears which is a great sight.

But when you finally reach Stanage Edge, that is when the reward really comes in to view. The majestic rocks standing proud in both directions. This route only takes you along a small part of Stanage edge so we advise you explore more of the area on a future walk to take in the full experience.

As the views are so stunning, we stopped for breakfast and a coffee before the route took is back away from the edge so we could sit and take in the view for a little while longer. after about another 20 minutes along the edge, the route takes you across some peat/wet lands which didn't appear to be very well walked so make sure you have a good way of navigating so not to stay off the path and get your self lost. As we crested a small ridge, a really picturesque little reservoir came in to view with a small building next to it, and it looks like a chocolate box type of little house that would be a wonderful place to hide away from the world.

After you pass the little reservoir, the path turns to a well laid stony path which followed a brook to the left of you all the way. this was quite a popular little route and we met quite a few dog walkers and walkers along the way.

The pat drops back down on the the road next to the reservoir for the last few hundred meters and then you are back at the car park. So all in all, a lovely little route with some stunning views and a nice little surprise by the small reservoir along the way.
